Many people are concerned that a procedure as involved as getting dental implants will be a long, painful process. But getting implants involves relatively little pain for most people. In fact, many people say that implants cause them less pain than a normal tooth extraction. We use local anesthesia during the procedure, and pain can be managed afterward with over-the-counter medication.

What about their effectiveness?

Dental implants really are amazing developments in restorative dentistry. Because they recreate the entire structure of a lost tooth, they provide stronger, more natural results. Overall success rates vary somewhat depending on their location in the jaw, but in general they have a rate of 98%. They are built to last a lifetime.

I’m a senior–can I still get implants?

If you are healthy enough for a regular tooth extraction, most anyone can be a candidate for dental implants. Good oral health is also necessary, including healthy gums and sufficient bone structure. Since the process takes several office visits over an extended period, you’ll also need to consider transportation and time commitments. Smokers or those with chronic health issues may not be good candidates.

Dental implants can help restore smiles missing one or all of their teeth for a lifetime. If you would like to learn more about implants or the other restorative options at Derek M.
